Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a safe, effective, nonsurgical procedure used to treat a variety of skin conditions including acne, rosacea, sun damage, and certain types of skin cancer. At Z-ROC Dermatology in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Matthew Zarraga, DO and Khongruk Wongkittiroch, DO use PDT to help you achieve younger, healthier skin. Call or book an appointment online to learn more about how PDT can benefit you.
During a photodynamic therapy session at Z-ROC Dermatology, Dr. Zarraga or Dr. Wongkittiroch applies a photosensitizing agent called aminolevulinic acid (ALA), in either a solution or gel form (Levulan or Ameluz, respectively), to your skin. Although an application of an acid onto your skin may sound painful, the application of ALA is not uncomfortable in any way.
The ALA is then allowed to incubate on your skin overnight. The following morning, ALA must be activated by a light source, and although the ALA can be activated by a variety of light sources, at Z-ROC Dermatology, your dermatologist activates the ALA with a light device called intense pulsed light (IPL); the same light device used for photorejuvenation and photofacials. This effect activates and destroys abnormal cells, leaving healthy skin unharmed.
Dr. Zarraga or Dr. Wongkittiroch personally performs the activation portion of the procedure with IPL, and it takes approximately 15-30 minutes.
The sensation of the treatment has been compared to multiple rubber band snaps; however, the treatment can be paused if you are experiencing significant pain or discomfort. Immediately after your treatment, your pain should be minimal to nonexistent.
The dermatologists at Z-ROC Dermatology recommend a variety of products to maximize your benefits from PDT, including:
These products are specially formulated and recommended for use after a photodynamic therapy session. While using these products, Dr. Zarraga and Dr. Wongkittiroch recommend that you discontinue the use of all other skincare products.
