Why Celebrities From Gwyneth Paltrow to Kim K Are Going For Microneedling

Open up the latest celebrity magazine and you’ll see the flawless faces of A-list celebrities looking back at you. Sure, much of their perfection is owed to Photoshop, but when your face is your brand, you’d better look your best, even when those filters are off. That’s why Hollywood’s beautiful people are all about microneedling.

Though not really a new procedure — it was pioneered by a doctor in France in 1952 — microneedling, or collagen induction therapy, has become increasingly common in recent years. More than a little credit needs to be given to the likes of Kim K and her sister Kourtney, Gwyneth, Angelina and dozens of other celebrities who sing the praises of this safe, minimally invasive procedure that’s yielding amazing results.

What is microneedling?

When you’re young your skin is resilient, firm, and vibrant. This is a result of collagen and elastin, two proteins produced by your body to support your skin, making it appear supple and youthful. As you age your body’s production of collagen and elastin slows down, beginning at around age 30, and lines and wrinkles show up. Sagging skin is another byproduct of aging.

The microneedling procedure boosts collagen and elastin production by slightly wounding the skin. In an effort to heal the wounds, the proteins flood the skin cells and the result is tighter, firmer skin that has a more youthful texture and appearance. Additionally, topical serums and creams are applied and penetrate the dermis much more readily.

In microneedling, a tool, affixed with very thin needles, ranging in length from 1/2 mm to 3 mm, are passed over your skin to create extremely small holes in your face. Although it sounds rather unpleasant, those who’ve experienced microneedling report that it’s highly tolerable, and your physician will do everything possible to ensure your comfort.

You’ll be administered a special calming serum post-procedure, to minimize any irritation. The procedure itself is safe and much less invasive than surgery. Recovery time is practically nil by comparison — about 48-72 hours — and results are very noticeable.

Who benefits most from microneedling?

Microneedling is safe and effective for just about everyone. For some, however, the procedure might not yield the hoped-for results. For those men and women who desire anti-aging benefits, or who suffer from early aging, poor skin quality, or acne scarring, microneedling is a wonderful solution.

People of color are prone to hyperpigmentation with laser skin treatments. Microneedling doesn’t result in any pigmentation issues and is a perfectly safe procedure for all skin types and hues.

But if you suffer from poor health, have a skin disease, are undergoing radiation, or have in the past year, are currently pregnant, on certain acne medications, or have a condition that makes wound-healing difficult, you may not be a candidate for microneedling. However, speak to your doctor.

Number of treatments varies

Depending on age, skin condition, and how well your skin responds to microneedling, you typically have around four microneedling treatments. Your treatment will be given over the course of about 12 weeks. Maintenance requires monthly treatments for optimum results.

Microneedling works in partnership with your body, so although you can expect to see immediate results, you see additional improvements over time. As the course of your treatment commences, expect more-defined results. Your skin gradually grows firmer and supple and fine lines, wrinkles, sagging, acne scarring, texture, and appearance show significant signs of improvement.
